3rdroot Johannesburg Managing Director Joey Khuvutlu welcomes two Umuzi interns who have joined 3rdroot. From left: Sabelo Gumede, Joey Khuvutlu and Tsehla Nkhi

3rdroot Johannesburg Managing Director Joey Khuvutlu has issued a challenge to leaders of South Africa’s digital agencies: he wants them to join him in an initiative to fund 100 programming learnerships between September 2018 and August 2019.

The learnership in question is a one-year computer programming learnership that prepares learner programmers for the creative industry by equipping them with the skills every product team needs, including coding, UX design, UX research, product management and data science. Importantly, they get to hone these skills in a simulated work environment, ensuring that they are being groomed into high-calibre creative professionals.

The programme is offered by Umuzi and was created in partnership with 3rdroot. These learnerships would be funded by individuals or organisations making them free to the participant.

3rdroot has a strong desire to address the chronic shortage of programmers facing its industry. As a result, the agency kickstarted the programme with R250,000 to fund the inaugural learnerships.

“3rdroot has invested further in the programme, which has quickly grown to 30 young people on learnerships, supported by several employers. But that’s not enough,” Khuvutlu said.

“I challenge other digital agencies to follow suit. On the one hand, there’s a dire shortage of programmers in our industry. On the other, in South Africa we have a large pool of what is known as the ‘missing middle’ – talented and capable youth who do not qualify for financial aid but also do not have enough resources to comfortably complete their studies.

“Stack Overflow, which has a community of over 4.7 million programmers, recently published the findings of its annual community survey. This confirmed that 69% of developers are at least partly self-taught and fewer than half have a formal degree in computer science. This makes programming a unique space, a low barrier to entry but a high potential for growth and productivity.

“In the digital economy, developers and data specialists are in high demand across all sectors including banking, consulting, telecommunications, healthcare and software. A shortage in these skills impacts all because only those with the deepest pockets will win.

“I therefore challenge each of the top 20 digital agencies to each fund five learnerships by August 2019. That’s a cumulative investment of just R12.5 million, but one that will go a long way to bring new talent into the industry and help alleviate the shortage we face.”

FCB Africa group CEO Brett Morris added: “”This is a fantastic initiative that is helping address a critical skills shortage. Huge credit to Umuzi and the 3rdroot team for going beyond the B-BBEE scorecards to benefit the industry at large. We really hope other agencies take up the challenge.”

According to Khuvutlu, the Umuzi model is an efficient and impactful solution. The benefits of the model cut across the industry:

Provides agencies with an opportunity to contribute to the resolution of South Africa’s technical skills shortage.

Provides a platform for agencies to contribute in shaping the digital industry’s future workforce.

Umuzi provides a 1-year programmer learnership in a ‘product team’ environment.

On completion of learnerships, learners are placed in the sponsor’s organisation with the immediate benefit of a new resource.

Umuzi is SETA accredited which means that there are tax benefits as well as contributions towards the sponsoring organisation’s transformation goals.

3rdroot Group Managing Director Mark Tomlinson noted: “What is equally important about this initiative is that it gives our industry the opportunity to not only shape and prepare South Africa’s future workforce – consider the trends in India, Indonesia and Venezuela – but to drive transformation in a way that goes beyond ticking boxes on scorecards.

The #100programmers challenge will be administered by Umuzi (www.umuzi.org). A one-year learnership will cost the participating agency R125,000 per learner. Email 100developers@umuzi.org for more details or to sign up.

Feminism, mentors, heroines and Women's Month

00

Did you know that there are more CEOs called ‘John’ on America’s Highest Paid 100 CEO list than there are women? And locally, there are more people called ‘Stephen’ than there are women on the country’s Top 50 Richest CEOs list? In fact, there is only one woman on that list, Magda Wierzycka, but don’t worry, we have three Stephens.

In terms of landing top leadership positions both locally and globally, women don’t seem to be doing that well in that most of the positions of power and prestige are occupied by men. This is especially sad considering that 52% of the world’s population is female.

Equality is much more than just hiring women

Also sad is this pretty dismal paper published in Psychological Science by the CEO of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering, Manglin Pillay. Pillay wrote: “The fact that more men occupy high profile executive posts is tremendous not because of gender, but because of appetite for work load and extreme performance requirements at that level, choosing what is important and where to allocate time.

“The reason why women do not occupy these positions is that women choose to have the flexibility to dedicate themselves to more important enterprises like family and raising of children than to be at the beck and call of shareholders who will wake you up in the middle of the night to attend to shareholder aspirations.”

In my opinion, it’s absolutely shocking that there is an expectation to choose between children or chasing a senior career. We have lot of work to do if we are to change mindsets like the one on show in Psychological Science.

Equality is so much more than just hiring women so that the company can say it employs an equal number of men and women. It isn’t as simple as giving ‘like for like’. Consider bathroom designs. Women take on average twice as long as men in the bathroom, but rarely is this taken into account in the planning when building, so, we wait and wait in queues. Ladies, that’s straight up sexism.

Women play vital role in marketing and advertising

It goes without saying that women play a vital role in the marketing and advertising arena, globally and in South Africa. In terms of pure economic power, women make up at least 65% of the global spending. Therefore, by having women participate in the ideation of marketing campaigns, the industry is ensuring that the work it produces for its clients converts and delivers a more layered and authentic messaging.

When it comes to women in management positions in the industry, they have more often than not experienced a struggle in working their way to the top through a very loud and impetuous industry. However, we are seeing a change in the ways departments are being run, with a focus on equal opportunity, fairness and a drive to make the industry more accessible to mothers or employees with personal circumstances that need support.

I set about calculating what the agency I work for can boast about in terms of recognising women and employing them in positions where they can contribute to the agency’s success, its clients’ success and influence society as a whole.

While we have figures we can be proud of, we realise that we need to improve, and to improve we need to continually discuss and address many issues that raise themselves on an almost daily basis.

Internal bias

Bias, for example, is one such issue. Something that surprises women is their own internal bias, based on how we have been raised and moulded, particularly in a patriarchal society like South Africa. We all have varying levels of bias about not wanting to hire someone who is married, pregnant, has children or believes that men have a better leadership style.

Lack of support for fellow women is another issue. Society has raised us to compete. We raise girls to see each other as competitors—not for jobs or accomplishments —but on a personal level. For instance, what clothing she wears, how she looks and other nasty gossip. In a time that we need each other’s support more than ever, we drag each other down, reinforcing men’s inherent bias that women aren’t natural leaders and focus on petty, shallow issues that stand in the way for excellent work.

I challenge every woman in the industry to review how you approach your job, your seniors, your juniors and yourself. We have made such headway, our mothers and grandmothers fought for this, we need to be part of continuing the change our society needs for us to all flourish in this industry and to pave the way for more women leaders.

3rdroot and FCB Cape Town Helps WCG Address Bullying in 5 Questions.

00

The Western Cape Government is striving to put an end to bullying at schools across the province by launching a mobile toolkit and campaign called 5 Questions to End Bullying.

Developed by 3rdroot and FCB Cape Town, in conjunction with child psychologists, they filmed a fake bullying incident in a school yard, and then constructed 5 questions that when asked in sequence after viewing the video, would change learners’ perceptions. Just see here:

To launch the mobile toolkit, influential students from all around the province shared the fake incident to their Social Media accounts. Their peers were prompted to find out more about the bully, pushing them to a mobile site where the 5 questions were set up to look like a Buzzfeed-style quiz. Answering the questions, they could come to their own conclusion, clicking through to discover how to behave in all kinds of situations.

Commenting on the campaign, WCG Head of Communication, Bronagh Hammond, said that bullying has reached an all-time high the Western Cape. “With many of the incidents filmed and shared on Social Media for their friends to see, learners don’t realise you don’t need to beat somebody up to be a bully,” she said. “We needed a way to help learners realise it for themselves.”

The Western Cape Government is using this toolkit to educate learners and schools throughout the province, hoping an important message, “Raise your voice. Not your phone” spreads far beyond.

“You can repeat a message over and over and over again but, but unless you let learners discover it for themselves, the message will only be heard, and not bring about behaviour change,” said Mike Barnwell, the CCO of FCB Cape Town.
